All about Jio Mart – Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Mart, an aggressive foray into the Indian Retail formats.

Updated: May 30, 2020

Reliance Jio has made a final foray into the domain on Amazon Pantry, Flipkart Supermart, Big Basket & Grofers, all vertical online marketplaces. Apart from going into grocery items, Jio mart would also be dealing with personal care, home care and baby care products. Mukesh Ambani’s big bet on this sector would definitely be heating up this segment as Reliance Industries limited has now officially launched its online grocery service, JioMart, across the nation after running pilot programme in Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan.

As per reports, JioMart will deliver groceries in more than 200 towns across the country. Currently, JioMart is available as a web version but the mobile version is expected to be available very soon. As per the website, JioMart is an online selling channel (format) of Reliance Retail Limited. It offers free express grocery delivery from neighborhood kinara stores. JioMart further claims that all products listed are sourced directly from the registered farmers. With JioMart, the company wants to move farmers online to sell their products and boost their business which was impacted due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Services of Jio Mart would be available in cities such as Chandigarh, Dehradun, Dhanbad, Gwalior, Kota, Ludhiana, Surat etc. Customers in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and other metros can also order from JioMart.

The Indian Grocery scene has 70% of Indian retail market and the Kinara stores constitutes of about 90% of the above. While JioMart claims it will be adding kirana stores shortly on its platform, the question arises whether this is just a test phase to see whether customers will flock to JioMart abandoning their neighborhood stores. Even if that is not the case or in the event that the test is not successful and the kirana stores just have to be brought on board, Reliance could use them as mere delivery mules, insisting that the stores stock what Reliance supplies, at the rate it decides. In an indication of that, Credit Suisse said, “In terms of pricing, Reliance has extended the Smart promise of ‘minimum 5 per cent off on MRP’ to all products on JioMart. The discount is higher on its private label brands, and is competitive to branded products.”

JioMart will compete with vertical online marketplaces such as Alibaba-backed BigBasket and SoftBank-funded Grofers and horizontal players including Amazon Pantry, Flipkart Supermart etc.

Apart from grocery, JioMart is also offering personal care, home care and baby care products.

Mukesh Ambani’s online grocery venture JioMart has expanded operations to multiple cities after running pilot programme in Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan. While the number of cities JioMart is now serving is not confirmed but based on the pin codes punched-in showed that the service is available in multiple Tier-I and II cities such as Chandigarh, Dehradun, Dhanbad, Gwalior, Kota, Ludhiana, Surat etc. Customers in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and other metros can also order from JioMart that will compete with vertical online marketplaces such as Alibaba-backed BigBasket and SoftBank-funded Grofers and horizontal players including Amazon Pantry, Flipkart Supermart etc.

Apart from grocery, JioMart is also offering personal care, home care and baby care products. The company is also giving a minimum of 5 per cent discount on select products. The expected order delivery according to JioMart is two days “however due to the current surge in orders it may be delayed further,” it said on the website while checking out an order. Users can pay via JioMoney wallet apart from standard options including other wallets, card payment, net banking and cash on delivery.
